Farke could block Gelhardt exit from Leeds as January transfer news emerges
Leeds United should consider keeping Joe Gelhardt if they fail to bring in any attacking reinforcements, according to Ian Darke.
The TV commentator, speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, believes Daniel Farke should hold onto cast-off Gelhardt until new arrivals have signed at Elland Road.
The 22-year-old has not played since 1 October through a mix of injury and being overlooked, and appears to be behind Patrick Bamford in the pecking order as well as Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph – consequently attracting him interest from other clubs.
“Farke won’t want to run the risk of leaving himself thin for the second half of the season if there are injuries,” Darke said.
“You always have to apply a worst-case scenario as a manager, but I’d imagine they’ll be looking to bring a couple in.
“If they can do that, Gelhardt might be the kind of player they can loan out and there will be a reasonable amount of interest. It doesn’t look like he’ll get too much of a look-in with Leeds.”
Joe Gelhardt could leave Leeds United to kickstart career
Gelhardt is a player who has shown his ability while at Leeds, chipping in with some memorable moments in recent years.
However, it appears his time in West Yorkshire could be ebbing to a meek end, with ambitious League One outfit Wrexham the latest club linked with a bid for either he or Bamford [Graeme Bailey, 21 December].

There is interest from the Championship as well as Scottish giants Rangers [Carlton Palmer via Football League World, 12 December], though it appears Leeds are understandably reluctant to loan the forward to a divisional rival.
In other Leeds United news, a key duo will be monitored ahead of the clash with Derby County, it has been reported.
