Exclusive: Paul Robinson claims Leeds 23y/o deserves England call-up
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson thinks that Kalvin Phillips has done enough to warrant a call-up to the England squad.
England qualified for the Euro 2020 finals with an impressive record of seven wins and one defeat, with a +31 goal difference.
However, there have been questions asked about the holding midfield role, with neither Harry Winks nor Declan Rice doing enough to convince fans.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “Kalvin Phillips’ performances and the way he has been playing, have attracted attention from Manchester United and other teams.
“He is another player who has improved under Bielsa, but it’s always difficult for a Championship player to be called up for England. I found that out when I was with Blackburn in the Championship.
“I had retired from international football at that point, but I was playing around players who I thought could have a chance of an England call-up, but it’s never easy.
“But Kalvin Phillips is doing everything he can to earn a call-up. I don’t think he is far away from a call and I don’t think anyone would have an issue with him being called-up. I think his performances have deserved one.
“There is an issue in the centre of midfield for England and I could see him being brought into the squad.”
Phillips has never played for England at any age level but has seen his career take a massive leap forward under the tutelage of Marcelo Bielsa.
Sky pundit Danny Higginbotham is another pundit who thinks that Phillips could be the answer to England’s problems in midfield.
He said, “The 23-year-old has been outstanding for Marcelo Bielsa’s side and has a number of really good attributes. I like his positional sense, he’s a very good tackler, and his distribution both long and short is fantastic.”
He said Phillips “could force his way into Southgate’s reckoning”.
