Exclusive: Pundit tips player heavily linked to Leeds to secure move before 5pm Friday
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson cannot see Leeds United making a last-minute bid to sign Said Benrahma despite the Brentford attacker being linked with a move to Elland Road earlier in the transfer window.
In July, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay reported that Leeds were keen on signing Benrahma, 25, and were confident he’d be available for less than £20million due to Brentford failing to win promotion from the Championship.
Plenty of Leeds fans backed the idea of signing the Algeria international too, but a deal failed to materialise before the international transfer window closed on Monday and instead, the Whites purchased Brazilian winger Raphinha from Rennes for £17million.
Robinson believes that although Benrahma is bound to leave Brentford before the 5pm transfer deadline on October 16, he will not be heading to Elland Road due to the strength in depth Marcelo Bielsa already has available to him in the 25-year-old’s position.
“I’m surprised he’s still there, to be honest,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“He’s been heavily linked but because the domestic transfer window’s still open, it probably has pushed that one through with the urgency others have gone through.
“I’d be very surprised if he’s still at Brentford after October 16 because he’s got a lot of suitors.
“But I don’t know where he’d fit in at Leeds after Raphinha arrived. They’ve got an abundance of talent in that area and it would be buying a player for the sake of buying a player.
“If I was Benrahma, I’d look at the Leeds squad and think: ‘Where would I fit in?’
“He probably won’t go to Leeds due to the fact he won’t be playing every week.”
Benrahma seems likely to head to West Ham at the moment with Sky Sports reporting that the Hammers are close to agreeing a deal for the Algerian.
Although Leeds reportedly thought Benrahma would be available for less than £20million, Sky now claim that West Ham are in advanced talks over a deal in the region of £30million.
Leeds cannot justify spending that much money and they probably cannot spend that much either with the club already splashing out around £100million on new arrivals since winning promotion to the Premier League.
Benrahma’s clearly a talented player based on what we saw of him at Brentford last season.
Let’s just hope that the Whites do not come to regret not pushing harder to land him.
In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay’s shared what he’s heard about Raphinha amid reports he didn’t want to join the Whites.
