Exclusive: Pundit sends PL warning after failed big-money striker bid tabled by Leeds

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said that Leeds will need to get a few “big deals” over the line this summer but urged caution after news that the Whites had failed with a £34.1m bid for Gent striker Jonathan David.

David ended up signing for Lille which has left Leeds United looking at other striker targets.

And Leeds were prepared to spend £30m+ on Ben White only to have the door shut on them by Brighton.

Robinson has claimed that Leeds will need to “spend carefully” as they plot their first assault on the Premier League in over 16 years.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “Leeds are going to need to get a few big deals over the one but we’ve seen Aston Villa spend over £100m and only just stay in the Premier League.

“We’ve seen Norwich not spend a penny and fall out with a whimper. Leeds will need to spend carefully.

“However, I’ve said that with Victor Orta and the way they do their recruitment, they seem to have it right at the moment.

“And the manager… Marcelo Bielsa, is a huge draw. Leeds are a completely different proposition with Bielsa at the helm.

“Players will look at what he’s done to Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper – he’s transformed them into two of the best players in the team.

“From the outside looking in, that’s a real draw.

“But they certainly need a new striker. Patrick Bamford only scored 16 goals last season and Leeds need to try and find a 20+ goal striker. He won’t come cheap.”

Leeds seem happy to spend the money on the right players but are struggling to get any clubs or players to agree at the moment.

Hopefully that will change soon – the new Premier League season starts in little over three weeks and Leeds play Liverpool at Anfield first.
