We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that he fears that Jean-Kevin Augustin is not as fit as he needs to be and that he won’t be used against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Augustin was left out of the Leeds squad to play Wigan on Saturday and there was a backlash from fans who are desperate to see him play.
Augustin did play 45 minutes for the Under-23s on Monday and has declared himself “absolutely ready, 100% fit”.
However, talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson isn’t convinced that Augustin’s idea of fitness marries up with Bielsa’s.
“I wasn’t surprised that he wasn’t on the bench against Wigan,” Robinson said.
“He’s a calculated risk, got a great CV, but there’s another side to him. PSG signed him, then got rid of him. Leipzig signed him and got rid of him. So there’s a reason at 22 he’s ended up at Leeds United.
“Playing Bielsa’s way you have to be really fit to play the way he wants. I think it will take him a couple of weeks to get used to it.
“He only started two games for Monaco, came on as a sub in eight, only scored one goal. So, for the manager to get the best out of him there’s no way he was going to throw him straight in.
“I fear he’s not as match fit as he needs to be. I don’t know how far off he is but Bielsa will not put his players in the team unless they’re 100% ready to do exactly what he wants.”
Augustin looked a bit off the pace for the Under-23s on Monday but he will have had another week of training under Bielsa ahead of the Forest game.
How fit does Augustin need to be to come on for five or ten minutes?
If there was another striker option then we could see Augustin being rested again but with Ryan Edmondson injured, Bielsa has no one else to turn to.
Surely he has to be in the squad on Saturday?
