We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has claimed that new Leeds striker Jean-Kevin Augustin is still not match fit.
He has claimed that Patrick Bamford will start today against Reading but added that he needs to score or risk losing his place in the side.
Leeds are looking for back-to-back wins – their first since a seven-game winning run put them in command of a top-two spot.
That was followed by a slump in form that’s seen the chasing pack catch up but, with Fulham drawing against Derby on Friday night, a win today would build that buffer back up again.
If that’s to happen, Robinson thinks Bamford has to start scoring again, with Jean-Kevin Augustin waiting on the bench for his chance.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson, who was at Elland Road last Saturday, said that Bamford would start today, with Augustin still struggling for fitness.
“Augustin still doesn’t look match fit,” Robinson said.
“I was at the game against Bristol last week and while it’s frustrating to watch Bamford, and he needs about 10 chances to score a goal, I think he had one of his better games of the season.
“Augustin came on but he looked as far off as he did the previous match. I think Bamford starts again.
“Bamford is the key player against Reading and he needs to start taking the chances that are being created.
“He’ll know his future guaranteed starts are going to start coming into question with Augustin waiting on the bench. He’ll know he needs to start scoring goals to keep his place in the team.”
Bamford has been a constant source of frustration this season.
He’s scored 12 goals in 32 games but has only scored in one game in his last nine, when he got a brace against Millwall.
He keeps missing big chances and is lucky that Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t think Augustin is fit enough to start yet.
That match fitness can’t be far off, though, and Bamford could certainly do with a big performance today.
