Exclusive: Paul Robinson claims 'brilliant' bench-ridden Leeds star has made rod for own back

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has claimed that Gjanni Alioski has turned himself into a super-sub thanks to the impact he’s making off the bench.

After a string of starts earlier in the season, Alioski has only started one of the last five but came on to great effect in the 2-0 win against Hull, scoring his fourth goal of the season.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “He’s been a real bit-part player this year.

“He’s come on for Harrison in the last two games in the 70/80th minute.

“He started against Huddersfield but that’s when they played a three at the back and a narrow three in midfield.

“Bielsa has tended not to use him at left-back but instead when they play the 3-3-3-1 formation if you like, and he plays narrow in the midfield then goes out wide to defend.

“But he’s a player who is brilliant to have in the squad as you know he’ll give you everything and you know what you’re going to get from him.

“And sometimes that is to a player’s detriment because if you’re able to have an impact off the bench, sometimes you find yourself sat on the bench which is unfortunate.”

Alioski will probably have to settle for a place on the bench again on Saturday.

Fulham play a 4-3-3 with Aleksandar Mitrovic up top and that means Marcelo Bielsa will probably play his preferred 4-1-4-1 with Stuart Dallas on the left.

Leeds are looking to stretch their unbeaten run to 12 games and increase the gap back to Fulham, which is currently 12 points.
