Exclusive: 'Not playing well' – Paul Robinson delivers strong message to Bielsa about Leeds star

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson says now “is not the time for changes” despite Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla’s struggles in recent matches.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson has urged Marcelo Bielsa to stick with the 33-year-old who he believes is “key” to the club’s promotion hopes.

Casilla came under criticism after failing to deal with a deflected corner that led to the only goal in Leeds’ 1-0 home defeat to Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

The loss saw Bielsa’s side drop to second in the Championship with their lead over third-placed Fulham cut to only three points.

When asked if Illan Meslier should be brought in to replace the Spaniard, Robinson told MOT Leeds News: No. I do not think so. Kiko is not playing well at the moment.

“At the start of the season, you could see he worked hard at his game and his decision making. He is having a dip at the moment but for his age and experience, it is key that the manager sticks with him. It is not a time to take chances or gamble. Meslier played one game and did okay.

“The Wigan goal came from a high ball that Casilla should have dealt with from a routine corner and he was far from convincing but it does not affect him. He continues to come for the ball. At times his decision making is wrong but it does not affect his confidence, which is a huge positive.”

Meslier made his only senior appearance for Leeds in a 1-0 loss at the Emirates in January as Leeds were knocked out of the FA Cup by Arsenal.

However, Leeds may be forced into playing without Kiko Casilla as the club await the verdict of an FA investigation into his alleged racial abuse of Charlton’s Jonathan Leko earlier this season, an allegation the player denies.

The FA hearing is expected sometime this month.

Leeds’ next game is a tough one, against promotion rivals Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday evening.
