Exclusive: Leeds tipped to land highly-rated midfielder after summer bid rejected

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has tipped Leeds to land Wigan’s Sean McGurk in January, saying that the club is a very attractive proposition to young players of that calibre at the moment.

Leeds have been linked with a January move for McGurk after reportedly having a summer bid turned down by the Wigan administrators.

The Sun claimed that Wigan believed they were losing too much talent over the summer. Leeds signed Joe Gelhardt from Wigan and he’s already turning heads in the Under-23s.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “It’s not just a flash in the pan at Leeds it’s a long-term project.

“I’d like the players to be coming through the academy at Leeds, that’s how it’s always been done historically, but as long as it’s not done at the detriment of the homegrown talent that’s already there, it’s got to be a good thing.

“Buying players of the age and calibre of McGurk shows that Leeds have big plans for the future.

“And Leeds are a very attractive proposition for young players at the moment because of the way the manager plays. Players like McGurk will want to come to Leeds.

“It bodes well that the club has a manager who wants to put in the foundations for the future.”

Bielsa has convinced highly-regarded youngsters such as Gelhardt, Sam Greenwood and Cody Drameh to sign for Leeds.

They’re the players of the future and McGurk could be the next to sign up to the Elland Road project.
