Exclusive: 'He's got the talent' – Paul Robinson delighted by early Leeds team news v Millwall

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said that Marcelo Bielsa has made the right decision in putting Ben White into the defensive midfield position tonight against Millwall.

Leeds have to play three games without Kalvin Phillips after the midfielder was sent off for a rash challenge in the 1-0 defeat to QPR.

White deputised when Phillips was suspended earlier in the season. However, he looked out of place and had possibly his worst game in a Leeds shirt.

Despite that, Robinson thinks that White is a better option than youngster Alfie McCalmont.

Bielsa confirmed that White would replace Phillips tonight in the only change to his team.

He also confirmed that Tyler Roberts and Jamie Shackleton were both fit.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “Bielsa had options but if [Gaetano] Berardi is fit then playing White in that defensive midfield spot is the right way to go.

“Berardi has coped well in defence when he’s been called upon this season and White has shown that he’s got the talent to play up in midfield.”

However, Robinson said that losing Phillips for three games is a “huge loss” for Leeds.

“He’s central to everything Leeds do under Bielsa”, Robinson said. “Losing him for three games at this stage of the season is a huge loss.

“Bielsa could have changed his system and bought Shackleton in, or given McCalmont a chance, but that would have been a gamble.

“I’m very happy with White playing there.”

Leeds are desperate for a win after a run of just one win in eight games.

Thankfully, teams around Leeds have been stuttering too, with West Brom just one point ahead at the top.

There’s a three-point gap back to Fulham in third but they’ve played one game more than Leeds.
