Exclusive: 'Big coup' – Paul Robinson delivers snap verdict on Augustin, worried about 2 issues
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that if Leeds sign Red Bull Leipzig striker Jean-Kevin Augustin, it would be a “big coup” but had some words of warning for Leeds fans too.
He pointed to the fact that things haven’t worked out for the striker at three top clubs and also that he’s only played 260 minutes of league football this season.
The Athletic first dropped news of the possible move to Leeds and this picked up pace with an article in L’Equipe on Saturday which said he wanted to join Leeds.
Since then, Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath has reported that Monaco have given him permission to cut short his loan leaving him free to join another club.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “He’s got an outstanding CV, my only bit of scepticism would be around the fact that it’s not worked out for him at three top clubs now and he’s only 22 years old. What’s going on with him?

“It didn’t work out for Augustin at PSG, it hasn’t worked out for him at Red Bull Leipzig and now it’s not worked out at Monaco. He’s only 22, you have to ask yourself why that is.
“But Leeds have been scouting him carefully and Bielsa’s man management will be key here. He’s a manager who’s confident about getting players and making the most out of them.
“He’s not the proficient proven Championship striker Leeds were looking for. He’s going to find the Championship very different to anywhere else he’s played and don’t forget he’s only played 260 minutes of league football at Monaco this season.
“Leeds need him to get up to speed in a hurry, there are only a few months left of the season.
“However, saying that it’s obviously a big coup for Leeds if it comes off and he’s got an outstanding CV.
“It’s a gamble but one I hope pays off. Bielsa is obviously building a team for the Premier League and I just hope that’s where they end up.”
Leeds had a third offer rejected by Southampton for Che Adams last week and that seems to have moved them to the Augustin deal.
The story was developing fast on Saturday, with current club Monaco reportedly giving him permission to cut short his loan deal.
Monaco also left Augustin out of their squad to face Strasbourg on Saturday night.
