MOT Leeds News conducted an exclusive interview with Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross, getting his views on the biggest talking points from Elland Road…
Beren Cross has claimed that Leeds United could target Southampton striker Che Adams once again this summer should Jean-Kevin Augustin not join on a permanent deal.
The former Birmingham man was the Whites’ number one target in January, but Cross believes he won’t be that high up on the shortlist in the summer.
Victor Orta and Marcelo Bielsa are big fans of the forward, who could be available for a smaller fee of £10million.
The Leeds Live journalist told MOT Leeds News that Southampton could consider Adams “dispensable” after looking like securing survival in the Premier League.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Cross said, “It looks like Southampton are safe now, so they will be planning to improve their squad, spend, and try to ensure they are not fighting for survival again next term.
“Therefore, fringe players like Che Adams will surely be considered dispensable, especially if they can recoup anything close to what they paid for them. Orta and Bielsa like Adams. He was the number one target at the start of January.
“Based on his displays against Leeds in the Championship you could see how he would fit into the system and play as the lone striker. However, assuming United are promoted, their demands will be greater than they were in January.
“Adams is still largely untested at that level. Augustin’s acquisition shows the quality and calibre of player that really could be available on the continent to Leeds, especially with a bigger budget. Adams will be on the list, if Augustin does not stay, but perhaps not as a high on it as he was.”
Obviously, any potential move for Adams will depend on Augustin, but it looks like he might have played his last for Leeds.
Leeds have not extended the loan and it remains to be seen whether they try and get out of the reported obligation to buy him if they’re promoted.
Ralph Hassenhuttl has found the best in Danny Ings this season and has preferred Michael Obafemi alongside him for the majority of the campaign when playing two up front.
If that continues, it’s very possible that Adams could be on his way out of St Mary’s in the summer, and for £10million, Leeds could get themselves a bargain.
