Exclusive: ‘Almost unheard of’ – Paul Robinson astounded by what one Leeds player has done
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that what Mateusz Klich has done is “unbelievable” and “almost unheard of” after registering his 84th straight league start for Leeds United.
After a bad start to his Leeds career, when he was shipped out on loan by Thomas Christiansen, Klich has gone from strength to strength under Marcelo Bielsa.
He’s started every single Championship game for the past two seasons and Robinson has claimed you’d be “really hard-pressed to find anyone else that’s done that in a long time”.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “The achievement of starting 84 straight league games, especially for Bielsa, and the consistency of that is actually unbelievable.
“In the modern age, I think you’d be really hard-pressed to find anyone that’s done that in a long time.
He’s not young either, he’s 29, 30 in the summer but he’s proved that he’s absolutely key to what Leeds do.
“He played 50 games last season and 39 this season. Bielsa obviously sees him as a kingpin but to start that many games it’s just unbelievable.
“It’s almost unheard of in modern-day football, but it shows you how well he looks after himself on and off the pitch. If there was any discrepancy off the pitch he just wouldn’t be able to do what he’s doing.”
If Klich can start the last nine games of the season then he’ll have played every single Championship game over the two seasons Bielsa has been at Elland Road.
It’s an incredible achievement and with Adam Forshaw missing pretty much all this season, his fitness has been hugely important to Leeds.
If they go on and win promotion – which is looking increasingly likely – Leeds will owe a big debt of gratitude to Klich.
