Ex-FIFA Official: Rodrigo goal should have been disallowed for Leeds United v Tottenham

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett to the MOT Leeds News team. Each week, Hackett will discuss the big moments from the latest Leeds United games and deliver his verdict on whether his successors got their calls right or wrong…

Keith Hackett has insisted that Leeds United should have seen their third goal disallowed in the 4-3 defeat against Tottenham on Saturday 12th November.

In a game packed with VAR controversy, the ex-FIFA referee believes that Rodrigo should have been left disappointed after a foul on Rodrigo Bentancur.

Michael Salisbury didn’t see it that way though and let play roll on, with Hackett left scratching his head at the decision which he thought was clear.

“That’s football,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“I think that they may have thought that they had timing issues, but that’s a foul. Why? He’s got the opportunity to blow, I can’t understand why he ignored that foul.

“I thought that was pretty poor refereeing – foul. I don’t know how he doesn’t see that as a foul, I think in the build-up to the goal, there was a clear and obvious error. If he’s applying an advantage, he didn’t signal it, but he still has the opportunity to give a foul.

“Leeds gain immediate possession, blow, it’s basic refereeing.”

VAR has been dreadful ever since its introduction, and this may be the first incident where the Whites have actually benefitted with a direct goal if it was even a foul in the first place.

After what happened with Illan Meslier in the first half of the defeat, there is no room for any complaints from anyone, especially from Spurs.

It simply isn’t good enough.

In other Leeds United news, an Aston Villa starlet was left in awe of one Whites sensation after the whirlwind defeat to Spurs.
