Djed Spence freeze out mooted as Leeds star could struggle after injury setback
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United …
Djed Spence could face a freeze-out from the Leeds United starting 11 after his early injury setback, according to Paul Robinson.
Spence’s loan from Tottenham was seen as a huge coup. A player who excelled in the Championship with a promotion-winning Nottingham Forest would always be desired at a club in Leeds’s situation despite his issues in North London, but an unfortunate knee injury in training won’t see him return for another four weeks.
The right-back could struggle to break into the settled starting 11 that has brought Leeds success in his absence, so the next month will be crucial in determining Spence’s role in the squad.
Robinson claims he can’t see where the 23-year-old will fit in Daniel Farke’s starting lineup, but is eager to see what he has to offer the club. He noted the need for quality squad depth at this stage of the season too, hinting that Spence could see game time soon.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson responded when asked which Leeds player he’s eager to see more from: “The two that stand out are, are Jaidon Anthony and Spence, but it’s difficult when the team’s playing so well. Squad depth is hugely important at this stage of a Championship season.
“We know the tough ask of a Championship season and it’s long international breaks, players will get injured, players will get suspended.
“Spence is the one that you look at and you think where’s he going to play? Where would the manager play him at the moment? Does he play him in that hybrid midfield role as well?
“He’s got great attacking quality that he could bring to the side. He raised a few eyebrows when he came in and people thought that’s a great signing. But injuries have blighted his start at Leeds.
“There’s a lot of players that will be utilised between now and the end of the season, him being one of them.”
