'Different level' – Exclusive: Pundit wowed as Leeds plot 'massive' free-agent signing

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United

Paul Robinson has been wowed by the news that Leeds are plotting a move for PSG attacker Julian Draxler.

Draxler is out of contract in the summer and free to talk to overseas clubs on a pre-contract deal in January.

Leeds have been linked with a move for Draxler before and he’s come up again in Gazzetta dello Sport last week (via TEAMtalk).

The report claims that Leeds are interested in bringing him to Elland Road in the summer.

Draxler has been struggling for regular starts with PSG but they have just welcomed Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “If you’re able to sign the likes of Julian Draxler, if you’re linked with those sorts of players, then it shows how far Leeds have come.

“It shows you’re competing properly at the top of the Premier League market.

“If you’re looking to sign players from PSG then it’s a different level to players we’ve been signing before.

“It’s going to be interesting to see what Poch does there. You’ve got a new manager going in, you’ve got a clean slate. If he was out of the picture there before he might not be now.

“With his speed, his ability to use both feet and his goal-scoring from distance, which was outstanding at Schalke when he was younger… If you can add a player like that to your squad it would be a massive signing for Leeds.”

Could Bielsa tempt Draxler to Leeds? It would involve Draxler buying into the long-term plan at Leeds but Pochettino and Bielsa get on well, so there shouldn’t be any friction there.

Draxler is out of contract in the summer so removing the fee would also make it economically possible.
