Daniel James to be axed, Raphinha to start in Leeds United v Wolves - pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.

Daniel James should make way to be replaced by Raphinha when Leeds United play Wolves at Elland Road on Saturday, according to Paul Robinson.

Raphinha missed Leeds’ 1-0 defeat to Southampton last weekend due to arriving back late from international duty with Brazil.

As reported by The Athletic’s Phil Hay, while Raphinha is in self-isolation in a hotel near Thorp Arch, the Brazilian winger is still able to train with Leeds and also play for them.

James struggled to impress for Leeds in their loss at St Mary’s and Robinson feels the Wales international will be axed to make way for the returning Raphinha when Wolves are in town on Saturday.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “Marcelo Bielsa’s obviously going to play the same system, there’s no sign of him changing the system or changing the number of attacking players he plays.

It’s Dan James or Jack Harrison for Raphinha when Raphinha comes back in, that’s the beauty of having those three players because you can chop and change.

I’ve not seen enough from James yet to suggest he should be ahead of Harrison. Jack gives them that little bit more and James’ end product needs to be worked on, he’s still learning the Bielsa way.

For me, Raphinha comes in for him and Harrison stays.

It’s a case of Leeds getting back to what they know, getting players into the side to get back to what they were doing last season.

Before the Southampton game, I wasn’t worried about performances or results. But the way they played, I hadn’t been concerned until that game.

It’s important to get Luke Ayling, Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford and Raphinha back in the side.”

Since joining Leeds in a blockbuster £30million deal on transfer deadline day, James has struggled to impress the Elland Road faithful.

In six appearances across all competitions, he’s yet to contribute to a goal either by scoring himself or assisting.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to re-sign this former midfielder in January.
