Dan Plumley: Thorp Arch rent not huge financial burden to Leeds United, still not ideal

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has insisted that Thorp Arch isn’t a big financial burden on Leeds United or Andrea Radrizzani as they continue to pay rent for their training centre.

The Finance Expert reacted after Phil Hay suggested that the Whites were paying “huge amounts of rent” ahead of their plans to build a new infrastructure.

Plumley admitted that while it may not set the club back much, they would much rather be using that money to go elsewhere in the business at Elland Road.

“Sticking to the training ground, it’s the same principle,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“In terms of that, it seems to be on the money. Generally speaking, it’s one of those where it doesn’t help, it’s not a huge financial burden in the grand scheme of running the club, but of course, you’d rather not have to pay that and own it outright because then that’s stopping money from being paid in rent to go elsewhere in the business.

“Part of that is suggesting that the club wants a new facility closer to the city centre in the long run so you can see the long-term plan of it.

“It’s one of those that isn’t going to make a difference in terms of millions of pounds, but it’s money you don’t want to pay on rent.”

Leeds were planning to build a new training ground on the Matthew Murray site, but those plans quickly went out of the window [Yorkshire Evening Post].

The bigger priority is now expanding Elland Road instead, and taking the capacity to over 50,000, with Angus Kinnear and Radrizzani getting the ball moving on that already.

Given plans have been in place previously though, it would be no surprise to see them resurface, but that may be one for once the 49ers Enterprises have taken full control.

Time will tell.
