Crysencio Summerville exit verdict shared at Leeds United as four ‘quality’ signings mooted

Don Goodman says Leeds United simply must earn promotion if they are to keep hold of Crysencio Summerville this summer.

Summerville was blocked from departing Elland Road following the Whites’ relegation from the Premier League last season.

The Dutchman has been superb for Leeds this campaign, albeit his 19 goals and nine assists may yet not prove enough to earn promotion.

Asked if Summerville is likely to depart United when the transfer window opens, Goodman told MOT Leeds News: “Summerville made it clear he wanted to leave.

“But Leeds persuaded him to stay and he’s reaped the rewards of that by being a star player and looking like he belongs at a higher level, which he clearly does.

“In terms of keeping him, the only chance Leeds have of doing that is if they’re promoted. Do I see one of the top teams coming in for Summerville if Leeds – one of the biggest clubs in the country – are promoted? Probably not.

“If Leeds are promoted and are then able to add three or four quality players to their XI, I think he’d enjoy the Premier League in a Leeds United shirt.”

Crysencio Summerville can guide Leeds United to promotion

The picture looks rather bleak in terms of Leeds’ automatic promotion hopes after losing form at the wrong time.

However, finishing in the top two is not yet entirely out of the question with one game to go, while there is also the safety net of the play-offs.

If Leeds are indeed going to go up, whether automatically or via the play-offs, they will need Summerville to be on top of his game.

Leeds United
Crysencio Summerville was Leeds’ saviour against both Watford and Hull, but has been well dealt with by both Coventry and Sunderland in recent days.

The attacker’s 28 direct goal involvements in the Championship this season is bettered only by Sammie Szmodics (29) and Adam Armstrong (33).

Given he has been linked with some elite clubs already, including Liverpool, promotion is the only hope of Leeds retaining Summerville.

The key is to remain positive and hope that Leeds United run out on the opening day of the 2024-25 season as a top-flight team with Summerville in the starting line-up.
