Connor Roberts has handed Leeds United ‘huge boost’ after Deadline Day Burnley exit

Paul Robinson is very satisfied with the business Leeds United did in the January transfer window in securing Connor Roberts on loan.

The Welsh international arrived late on Deadline Day from Burnley and immediately indicated that he would like to make it a permanent move according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay (1 February).

Having let two full-backs to depart earlier in the window – Djed Spence and Luke Ayling – Daniel Farke was at risk of being left undermanned in defence if nobody was brought in.

But Robinson believes Roberts, 28, has the quality to provide a “huge boost” to the Whites for the Premier League promotion battle.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News he said: “I think he’s a good signing, I really do. He’s a combative player, an experienced player, and he’s got experience in the Championship and in the Premier League.

“It was very apparent from the off that Daniel Farke wasn’t going to strengthen his squad just for the sake of it. He was going to bring players in who would have an impact.

“Connor Roberts is one of those, a Premier League-quality player. He’s not been given his opportunity this season at Burnley for whatever reason, but you look at their results and their league position and you question why a player like him hasn’t been utilised more.

“He can play in many different positions and the experience that he brings off the field as well with his international quality will be a huge boost for Leeds.

“That was a player that I was actually pleased to see come in during the window, a player that will make a difference, signing a good-quality football player.”

Deadline Day Roberts arrival at Leeds United provides ‘huge boost’

Leeds United saw more players leave Elland Road than arrive during the winter window but with a squad in excellent form and previously-peripheral players stepping up in a big way they appear to have got the key job done.

Given the difficulty any new arrival has to break into the high-functioning Whites XI it is somewhat of a coup to land a Premier League defender, not least one who has recent promotion experience.

Roberts appears to have the sort of attitude that Farke will benefit from over the final months of the campaign, and ahead of a trip to his former side Swansea City he has added to an already vital Welsh contingent at Elland Road.
