Championship loan mooted for Charlie Crew amid Crysencio Summerville praise at Leeds United
Paul Robinson believes Leeds United youngster Charlie Crewe could be loaned out to a Championship club next season, admitting his future would change based on promotion.
The 17-year-old has broken through into the first-team set-up at Elland Road this season, having impressed at Thorp Arch. But with three bench appearances, he has yet to make his senior debut.
Crysencio Summerville recently has his praises at the EFL Awards, shared by Football Manager via TikTok, saying: “We have trained with Charlie Crew, and I think he is a really good midfielder. Keep a look out for him because he’s a really good player.”
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “I think fans should be excited because they’ve got a few good youngsters coming through, and Archie Gray is just the pinnacle of what’s come through this season.
“I think with Crewe and others, the manager has proven with Archie Gray that he is not afraid to play the youngsters if they’re good enough and ready.
“He integrates them into the first-team training sessions so the manager will understand what he has at his disposal. A lot of these young kids’ futures, whether or not it’s on loan, depends on what league Leeds are in next season.
“In the Championship, it would allow them to be involved in the squad and get game time. If Leeds are in the Premier League, I think it’s a completely different opportunity where they go out on loan to the Championship or the top of League One and begin their career there.
“To hit the ground running in the Premier League is always difficult. Without inside knowledge, it’s the manager who will make those calls and he’s not afraid with the likes of Archie Gray.”
Will Charlie Crew make his Leeds United debut next season?
If Gray’s sharp rise to fame is anything to go by, Crew has a very good chance of cementing himself in Farke’s first team next season. However, it definitely depends on promotion for the youngster.
While he has impressed for the Under-21s this season, taking the captain’s armband on occasions in the Premier League 2, it is a huge step up to the senior Premier League.
A loan move back down to the Championship seems like the right call for Crew, though this decision is likely to be made during the summer once Leeds have learned their play-offs fate.
Whether the Wales youth international is able to claim his senior debut or not, it is still a promising sign of the players being produced at Thorp Arch as Farke continues to build something special at Elland Road.
In other Leeds news, the 49ers were “really big” on one former Premier League manager before hiring Daniel Farke.
