Burnley 0-0 Leeds United: Ex-FIFA official comments on controversial incident

Leeds United were rightly not awarded a penalty during the first half of their 0-0 draw with Burnley, according to Keith Hackett.

The Whites played out a rather forgettable stalemate at Turf Moor on Monday (27 January), with very few incidents at either end.

Arguably the biggest talking point arrived in the opening 45 minutes when Sam Byram was sent to the ground by Jaidon Anthony, leading to faint penalty appeals.

However, the referee was quick to wave those away – a decision former FIFA official Hackett feels was the right decision.

Hackett exclusively told MOT Leeds News: “It was a good call – it’s not a penalty kick for me. The player goes to ground too easily.”

Leeds United claim valuable point at Turf Moor

In a high-profile clash between two of the three sides realistically battling for automatic promotion, this was a rather poor advert for the Championship.

Not that the travelling Leeds fans will care all that much, though, as this was a welcome point.

There is an argument to be made that Daniel Farke’s men could have been a little more brave, but ultimately they keep Burnley at bay with this draw.

And with Sheffield United losing 3-0 at home to Hull City at the start of the weekend, Leeds are closer to automatic promotion than they were at the start of the matchday.
