BT pundit claims Leeds United talent Joe Gelhardt’s assist against Brighton was ‘lucky’

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Joe Gelhardt is the “only answer” Leeds United have in the absence of Patrick Bamford but he was “lucky” against Brighton says Paul Robinson.

The young striker showed fantastic skill in a tight space to dig out a cross from inside the penalty area, which Pascal Struijk converted to give the club late, late hope of survival.

But while BT Sport pundit Robinson admits he was delighted with the 20-year-old’s role after Jesse Marsch’s confusing decision to leave him out previously, he claims the forward was fortunate.

Listen, I’ve been calling for him to play for a long time,” he said speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News.

I was pleased when he played at Arsenal but then he left him out against Chelsea, in a very strange formation and a very strange set up.

I was delighted with the way that he played, but I think he got a little bit lucky with the assist in all honesty.

I think it got away from him, and it just bounced up nicely, and he was able to lift it in and get the assist.

He’s a player that I like in the system that they play without Patrick Bamford. He’s the only answer that they’ve got.”

When Gelhardt scored the dramatic late winner against Norwich to set up the run of results that appeared to have made the club safe, he looked certain to assume a greater role.

Then when Bamford was again ruled out it seemed logical that Joffy would slot straight in, but for one reason or another it hasn’t happened consistently.

Whether it was deliberate or luck, he showed his worth once more late on against the Seagulls, and Marsch surely has to give him the chance to make one last telling contribution on the final day.

In other Leeds United news, the club would be set for a minor financial boost in one area if they are relegated.
