'Bielsa has seen something' – Exclusive: Pundit reacts to report Leeds to break transfer record

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said while “Bielsa has seen something” in Jean-Kevin Augustin, the striker is still an “unknown quantity”.

Robinson was reacting to a report in German publication Bild that claimed Leeds will be obliged to complete a permanent transfer for Augustin if they get promoted.

The £18.2m fee would break the record transfer fee of £18m that Leeds paid for Rio Ferdinand in November 2000.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “I think Augustin is still an unknown quantity. He’s not been given the opportunity to prove himself and he’s not been match fit.

“I suspect with this break he’s had the opportunity to get himself match fit, but there’s an underlying issue with him somewhere… Monaco sending him back, PSG selling him.

“He’s an undoubted talent but at the moment he’s an unknown, he’s got a lot to prove.

“Saying that, Bielsa has seen something in him, he’s definitely still young enough, and if he’s willing to put the work in to play the way that Bielsa wants him to then it will be interesting.

“I suspected he was on trial for the rest of his loan deal before lockdown but I think Leeds will give him a chance in the remaining games now.”

Augustin has been working hard – of that much we’re sure about.

Leeds United posted a video of a trimmed-down Augustin putting himself through some punishing workouts at Thorp Arch.

When the action finally resumes, we can see Augustin being in the matchday squad, although Bamford, if fit, will still lead the line.
