Adidas receive most of Leeds United shirt sale windfall after record update

Adidas will benefit more financially from record Leeds United kit sales this season, Dan Plumley has said.

Leeds had to move heaven and earth to persuade the German giants to produce the Yellow away kit this season, and it worked after breaking records for kit sales in the first 24 hours of its release [Leeds Live].

Plumley, a football finance expert, admitted that Leeds get their payment from the initial commercial deal with Adidas mostly benefitting from the sales instead.

“It tends to be more valuable to Adidas or the supplier,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“It depends on how the deal is structured, some clubs nowadays are putting in with deals that they’ll get a small proportion of shirt sales as well, that wouldn’t be much higher than five per cent on average.

The bulk of the money there would still be for Adidas in terms of shirt sales, but of course, Adidas has already entered into the commercial deal with Leeds, which is where the payment to the club is.

It still tends to be that the manufacturer will take the majority of the money for kit sales, and it does depend on the terms of a deal as sometimes clubs are taking a little kit.

The bulk of the money goes from Adidas to Leeds in the overall sponsorship deal and then Adidas will benefit for the most part from the shirt sales.”

The Whites are tasting success in yellow this season, and currently sit third in the Championship heading towards Christmas, two points off top.

As always, promotion back to the Premier League is the main goal and if that is secured, these commercial deals with the likes of Adidas will only get bigger.
