49ers Enterprise likely look at cost after Leeds United transfer twist with Djed Spence – Finance Expert
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.
Dan Plumley has insisted that the 49ers Enterprises will have looked at the cost attached to Djed Spence before terminating his loan at Leeds United.
The decision unexpectedly came out of the blue at Elland Road, with attitude problems since emerging after the Whites paid Tottenham £1million to take him for the season [Fabrizio Romano].
The finance expert admitted there is always a risk attached to loan moves, and despite not being an insignificant amount of money, it’s not the worst-case scenario for Leeds.

“I think it does,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News when asked if the cost comes into it.
“You look at the risk and reward of a loan versus a transfer, so obviously, it has not worked out in the best kind of terms in what has happened in the loan, but that is still relatively cheaper than acquiring that player at full cost.
“You’ve got that balance to be struck between the decision that you make, and obviously, there are other factors that go into that about the club that are giving the player out on loan and the player’s own decision within that.

“I guess, as with any transfer there are risks attached, but doing it in a loan way negates some of that risk in the first instance and if it doesn’t quite work out, £1million is not an insignificant amount of money, but it’s not the worst case scenario.
“You take that as how the market is and sometimes, as you know, it doesn’t quite work out as you expect it too.”
