Wilfried Gnonto must leave Leeds United this summer after what happened minutes after Wembley defeat
Wilfried Gnonto must be sold by Leeds United after the disrespect shown following the playoff final defeat against Southampton at Wembley.
The Italy international started on the right-wing for Daniel Farke’s side as the Whites fell to a 1-0 defeat, meaning they will spend another season in the Championship.
But while that was a major disappointment for the club and fans, what happened just minutes after the final whistle should have been the last straw for a number of people and the decision-makers especially.
Wilfried Gnonto wants to leave Leeds United
With the players still on the Wembley turf and some like Archie Gray, Ilia Gruev and Georginio Rutter inconsolable in defeat, a report emerged from Italy that Gnonto wants to leave.
Journalist Francesco Guerrieri reports (26 May) that the 20-year-old wants to return to Italy and that offers from Serie A clubs will get priority this summer as he looks to leave Elland Road.
That’s a huge slap in the face to Leeds and their fans, who have spent the year backing him and supporting him despite the crazy stunt he pulled last summer in trying to force through an exit.
Only after the 49ers refused to sanction an exit did the winger apologise to the squad and manager and get his head back down to work on winning his place in the team back.
But to immediately brief that you want an exit after failing to make it to the Premier League is just purely disrespectful, and it’s now time for the club to cut ties with him.
It’s clear for all that he is only in it for himself at this point, and if he isn’t putting the team’s best interests first then he shouldn’t be here. That’s not the attitude that will get the club back up.
The 49ers must now cash in and ensure that a message is sent. We’re all Leeds aren’t we?
