Wayne Rooney sack: Leeds United will be gutted by latest updates at Plymouth

Leeds United could miss out on the chance to potentially lift the Championship title in front of Wayne Rooney if he’s sacked by Plymouth Argyle.

The Whites head to Home Park on 3 May, the final day of the Championship season, and after retaking top spot from Sheffield United with a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough, are well placed to claim the title.

Coming up against Rooney’s Plymouth, whom they easily defeated 3-0 at Elland Road last month, would be a glorious chance for Daniel Farke’s much-fancied Leeds side to secure the title in style.

However, Rooney is now under “huge pressure” as Plymouth continue to flounder in the bottom three with a 2-1 home defeat to Swansea on Tuesday [Daily Mirror, 11 December].

Leeds fans may miss out on the chance to rub Rooney’s face in the dirt on the final day.

Leeds United surely set to miss out on Wayne Rooney humiliation

If Rooney has remained in post by the time the Peacocks pitch up at Home Park on the final day of the campaign, United fans will be shocked, given the display his side put in at Elland Road last month.

Plymouth failed to even muster a shot – let alone one on target – in their 3-0 defeat, and with Argyle winning just once and picking up some heavy losses since then, the writing is on the wall for Rooney.

From an Elland Road perspective, winning the title on the south coast would reignite memories of 1990 when the club did exactly that at Bournemouth, and United have the backing of many to do just that.

Creating a party atmosphere amid what will likely be a relegation do-or-die match for Plymouth – especially if Rooney is still in charge – would only add to the mood of celebration for the travelling fans.

However, if Rooney is dismissed long before that date, as is expected, it may just take some shine off of a potentially perfect day for Leeds supporters, who rarely miss a beat when it comes to piling in on the former Manchester United player.
