Signing Phil Jones will not solve Leeds United defensive problems
Leeds United have been linked with a move for Manchester United defender Phil Jones this summer, according to Spanish media outlet Marca.
The 30-year-old has lacked first-team minutes for the majority of his career at the Old Trafford after making a move in the summer of 2011.
It is believed that Jones is keen on putting an end to his 11-year time with United and is open for a move to another club.
On the other hand, Jesse Marsch has prioritized defensive recruitments for next season as he looks to improve the backline that conceded the second-most goals in the 2021-22 Premier League season behind relegated Norwich City.
The forgotten English talent
When Manchester United signed Jones from Blackburn Rovers, many thought that the 20-time Premier League champions were signing a future England captain.
However, inconsistencies and injuries have totally ruined a career that promised a lot at that time.
Numerous managers have come and gone since he joined the club, but none have considered him reliable enough to make him a permanent member of the first team.
The biggest problem for the former Blackburn defender has always been his lack of fitness. Former United manager Jose Mourinho was also critical of Jones’ injury record and wanted more from him.
In the recently concluded season, the Manchester United defender only had four Premier League appearances for the club.
In 2022, he only started once for Ralph Ragnick’s team which was against Wolves at Old Trafford [Transfermarkt].
Considering the fact that Leeds had the second worst defensive record in the 2021-22 Premier League, adding Jones will not do anything to improve it. It will just be another squad member collecting wages on the sidelines.
In other Leeds United news, talks are scheduled after Leeds tabled a big-money bid to secure another new signing.
