Sam Greenwood can be perfect Patrick Bamford replacement at Leeds United

Another injury setback is the last thing Patrick Bamford or Leeds United wanted but that’s what is facing Jesse Marsch for the immediate future.

The England international limped off during the Whites’ epic 3-2 win away at Wolves prior to the international break and now he appears set to miss a handful of games towards the end of the season.

Marsch won’t be grinning from ear to ear with the news given how prolific Bamford has proved to be in the Premier League for Leeds but this does give him the opportunity to hand a chance to one of the youngsters making waves at Thorp Arch.

Attacker Sam Greenwood, 20, replaced Bamford at Molineux and he needs to do so again when the Whites welcome Southampton to Elland Road on Saturday.

Not only has he starred for the club’s youth teams in recent seasons but he is also taking his talents onto the international stage.

Greenwood scored his first goal for England Under-20s last night, according to LUFC Youth Academy on Twitter, in a 3-1 win against Germany.

Former Whites hero Jermaine Beckford replied to the aforementioned tweet with clapping emojis as he wallowed in the glory of the 20-year-old.

He does have tough competition from Gelhardt when it comes to the striker position but with Marsch operating a front two rather than the lone wolf of Marcelo Bielsa, maybe both players could start against the Saints.

It would be a massive gamble to make, especially with relegation not totally out of the question just yet, but maybe one that would reap huge benefits for the club in the long run.

A front two of homegrown players sounds like a dream and Leeds could be close to making that a reality in the future.
