Rothwell looking over shoulder at Leeds United as Farke shares Gruev update
Joe Rothwell will be looking over his shoulder at Leeds United after Daniel Farke revealed Ilia Gruev is “looking good” in his injury recovery.
The Bulgarian suffered a long-term injury blow earlier in the season against Norwich City but now appears to be on a positive road to recovery.
Farke shared an update about the 24-year-old in his pre-match press conference before the clash against Derby on Saturday (7 December), transcribed by Leeds Live.
He said: “After these eight games we will draw a line under it. Are there new injuries? I am happy with our squad and with key players coming back.
“Ampadu is back in training now, but Gruev looking good, still long-term. We don’t take a decision too early.”

The Bournemouth loanee has formed a positive partnership with Ao Tanaka since injuries to the Whites’ main midfield duo.
As a result, results haven’t fallen off and Leeds remain in the race for promotion alongside Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland.
Regardless of his form in recent weeks, the 29-year-old could be concerned with Ampadu and Gruev potentially returning when it comes to his game time.
Considering he is on loan until the end of the season, Farke isn’t going to have much loyalty or need to give the ex-Blackburn man regular minutes.
This could see him once again return to being a bench option, as he was earlier in the campaign after joining during the summer.

With that being said, there is still set to be weeks or months before Gruev returns to the starting XI but the prospect could still have a negative effect on Rothwell.
The loan star has performed well and doesn’t necessarily deserve to be dropped yet, even if Farke’s favourites return.
