Patrick Bamford embarrasses himself after Leeds United goal v Rotherham
Patrick Bamford has embarrassed himself after scoring with his elbow to open the scoring in the Leeds United win against Rotherham, celebrating by replicating the finish with his elbow towards the crowd.
It was a ridiculous choice of celebration from the striker. Scoring with your arm is one thing, fair enough it happens and if the ref doesn’t see it there’s nothing you can do, but showing it off was a step too far.
Most of the time when you see goals of this type, the scorer will try to take the attention away from it, or even celebrate sheepishly, but Bamford’s celebration was embarrassing.
Footage of the celebration was shared by WALMOTtv on X following the game.
Patrick Bamford cheated in Leeds United v Rotherham?
While it’s far from the worst thing in the world, can you imagine the uproar if the shoe was on the other foot? If Jordan Hugill had scored a handball and then sarcastically owned up to it in front of the away end? Elland Road would have erupted.
Of course, fans will love it. The blatant winding up of his opponents is the type of thing every home fan wants to see, but it’s not just about Leeds and Bamford, it’s about having some shame and respect for your opponent.
Putting bias aside, Bamford’s celebration is essentially an admission of cheating. He knows what he’s done, shows no regret or even a hint of embarrassment about it, and proudly shows it off to the fans as if he should be proud.
Coming from a player with a history of incidents as well – after a petition was started to get him banned after a blatant dive against QPR earlier this season – it really isn’t a good look for the Leeds striker regardless of what will likely be positive fan reception towards it.

You just have to think – imagine somebody did that against Leeds. It’s about the integrity of the sport more than anything, and if there was ever an advert for why VAR is needed in football, Bamford’s cockiness has just provided it.
