Two Leeds players on disciplinary tightrope v Middlesbrough
The bad news? There are currently two Leeds United players who are one caution away from a one-game suspension. To make things worse, one of them is Kalvin Phillips.
Ezgjan Alioski is the other and he’s just made his comeback to the first-team after a period injured and on the bench.
Phillips picked up his last yellow card in the win against Blackburn and it was avoidable, as he blocked John Buckley from taking a quick free-kick.
The good news? There’s only one more game to go before the yellow cards are wiped and players start again.
That means that Phillips and Alioski just need to get through the game against Middlesbrough before the slate is wiped ahead of the 20th game of the season against Huddersfield on December 7.
Luke Ayling must have know he’d got room to play with. He’s on three but has picked up two yellow cards in the last two games.
After winning the 2019 FIFA Fair Play award following the actions of Marcelo Bielsa and the Leeds players in the game against Aston Villa last season, it’s credit to the team that they’ve had so few cautions this season.
Phillips is so crucial to the side, though, that Leeds desperately need him to get through the next game without a caution.
Leeds take on Middlesbrough in the Championship at Elland Road on Saturday with a 3pm kick-off.
A win would see Leeds back to the top of the table, with West Brom playing Preston on Monday.
