Leeds United have been linked with a number of players since football in England ground to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Victor Orta is likely to be carrying on with his scouting work and compiling list of players who Marcelo Bielsa could sign in the next transfer window based on all possible eventualities.
One possibility for Leeds is that that they’ll need a new goalkeeper with Kiko Casilla entering the final year of his contract in June as well as being hit with an eight-match ban this month for racist abuse on the football pitch.
There is every chance that the Whites get rid of Casilla due to his actions at The Valley in September and that is why the club seems to be on the hunt for a new goalkeeper.
Italian news outlet TuttoB has reported that Leeds, as well as Arsenal, are in the hunt to sign Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, who has been in good form while on loan at Serie B club Trapani this season.
SerieBNews has reported that the 19-year-old is valued at up to £10.6million by Atalanta, which would be a costly deal for a goalkeeper who’s only kept two clean sheets while battling away against relegation in Italy’s second-tier.
Carnesecchi has still been one of the best young players in Serie B and it is no surprise that the Italy Under-21 international is on Leeds’ radar.
However director of football Orta could save Andrea Radrizzani millions by signing a player who is sitting right under his nose – rather than the expensive Atalanta teenager.
Illan Meslier has done nothing but impress in his appearances for Leeds this season.
He’s played just three times and conceded one goal, which was away at Arsenal in the FA Cup in January.
Meslier, 20, is on loan at Elland Road from Lorient but French news outlet Ouest France has reported that if he plays 10 times, or if the Whites go up, then a £5million permanent clause will be triggered.
That means Meslier would be up for grabs for half as much as what Carnesecchi is – and the Frenchman has already proven himself at Leeds so far this season.
Carnesecchi might be a good signing but why do Leeds need yet another young goalkeeper in their ranks? Why not put faith in Meslier being the number one and signing a more experienced shot-stopper to serve as back-up and possibly a mentor for the Elland Road loan star.
It makes way more sense than splashing over £10million on someone who’s unproven in England.
In other Leeds United news, this Leeds-linked defender could be a new project for Marcelo Bielsa to sink his teeth into.
