MOT View: Leeds United should dump Junior Firpo and give Cody Drameh first-team chance next season

The future of Cody Drameh seems to be a big talking point for Leeds United this summer, but it’s time to give him a well-earned first-team chance.

The youngster has been a shining light in the youth teams over recent seasons and demanded more first-team opportunities during the January window, eventually securing a loan to Cardiff against the wishes of Marcelo Bielsa.

Since moving to Wales and the Championship, he has continued to shine and is now being tipped to win their Player of the Year award despite only being there for half a season.

But while he deserves his chance, it may have to come in a position that isn’t his absolute best but it gets his foot in the first-team door.

Luke Ayling is deservedly the first-choice right-back at the club and it would be a surprise to see him displaced any time soon, with a new contract surely en route.

But at left-back, the starting berth is wide open after the poor showing of summer signing from Barcelona Junior Firpo this season.

The Spaniard has struggled to cope with the physicality of the Premier League, suffering with regular injury problems and getting caught out regularly when on the pitch.

But more than that he has been causing more problems for Leeds than he has the opposition on the pitch, with some poor defensive showings and finding himself targeted on a regular basis.

It’s clear that Leeds need an upgrade, but they don’t need to spend money to get one when Drameh is right there begging for his chance.

Capable of playing on either flank, he is effective going forward with a great cross and a relentless engine but he’s also a steady defender in one on one situations and when called upon in a duel.

Leeds could solve multiple issues with just one decision this summer. Fix their left-back issues, save a bit of cash on wages and give a young player a deserved first-team opportunity.

Get rid of Firpo, he’s been rubbish, and bring Drameh into the first-team squad on a permanent basis.
