MOT View: Leeds dodged big summer bullet as linked star proves head is way too big for his boots

Leeds United were linked strongly with a move for Brentford attacker Said Benrahma this summer but in the end signed other targets.

It was said that Leeds were put off after Benrahma posted a ridiculously overblown video of his luxury holiday, at a time when fans were suffering through a period of real uncertainty brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Phil Hay claimed that Leeds didn’t think he would fit in with the Leeds dressing room.

Some Leeds fans were willing to forgive and forget and thought the player offered enough to overlook the misstep.

However, we’re glad that Marcelo Bielsa stuck to his guns and there’s already evidence mounting that he was right to snub Benrahma.

Earlier this week The Mirror reported that a late move to West Ham could be in doubt because of a falling out between Benrahma and Brentford over ‘broken promises’.

The move was resurrected but now, Athletic journalist Dominic Fifield, has said the deal is stuck in negotiations with Benrahma making big demands.

He wrote, “Not a huge surprise the negotiations over Said Benrahma’s proposed £30 million transfer from Brentford to West Ham seem permanently stuck at the ‘discussing personal terms’ stage.

“Suggestion has been he is seeking a hefty salary package – big for a player yet to feature in the Premier League anyway.”

The Sun reported that he was looking for a £16m package worth an eye-watering £60k-a-week.

That’s a hell of a lot for a player who has never started regularly above Championship level.

Sure, he’s a talented player but someone like that just wouldn’t fit in at Leeds. Marcelo Bielsa wants players who want to play for Leeds.

He keeps his players humble and it’s led to a real team spirit at Elland Road and that comes through with the performances on the pitch.

The last thing Leeds need is a diva who values money and material goods more than playing football for a team.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see the deal go through and, with all due respect to West Ham, they seem to be the perfect destination for an overpriced and demanding winger.
