MOT View: Leeds fans bound to agree with Wayne Rooney claim about PL promotion bid

Leeds United have been left in a state of limbo since their promotion bid was brought to a halt by the coronavirus pandemic.

It does seem like the FA, Premier League and EFL are heading towards a decision where the current season will be finished at some point, but there are still some who have aired the idea of scrapping the entire campaign.

No one knows when the football will reconvene – and there are far bigger issues in the country right now – but it is definitely something that is on the mind of a lot of people in this country. Especially in Leeds.

Marcelo Bielsa’s team have done so well to be where they are.

They’re top of the Championship, seven points clear of third and have produced some truly fantastic football and their run of form before the suspension was a strong sign they are ready for promotion.

Derby County forward Wayne Rooney has now spoken out to say that the 2019/20 campaign should be finished due to it being unfair on those in promotion-winning spots.

Leeds are one of those teams and all fans are bound to agree with Rooney’s views.

“It’s also right in terms of promotion and relegation and Champions League places,” the ex-Manchester United star wrote on The Times website. “These issues are so big for the clubs involved that I imagine there would be a lot of legal fights if the season was just abandoned. The fair thing is to finish 2019-20 — even if we have to lose next season in the process.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if finishing the season takes until the end of 2020. Football, like every other industry, is in unknown territory and, just like every other industry, has to listen to the advice and take all necessary precautions. For me, that rules out finishing the season behind closed doors.”

That is another good point by Rooney too.

As much as we want football back. We don’t want it to come back at a point when fans are not able to attend matches.

We want to see Elland Road filled. We want to see the 12th man roaring Bielsa’s men to victory. We want to see promotion won in front of the supporters who have waited so long to see their team back in the Premier League.
