MOT View: Latest 25y/o display should ring alarm bells at Leeds after shocker v Fulham
To put it bluntly, Leeds United winger Helder Costa had a shocker in the 2-1 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
Leeds were by no means at their best in the capital and not many of Marcelo Bielsa’s players could really hold their head up high in the loss.
However Costa certainly stood out as one of the worst players on the pitch for the Whites and his display at Craven Cottage should be ringing some alarm bells.
Costa had been playing well for Leeds before their trip to Fulham on Saturday.
He assisted the winner against Reading last month and scored in the win against Middlesbrough and 3-3 draw versus Cardiff.
Leeds fans had waited a while for Costa to start chipping in with goals and assists more regularly after a slow start to life on loan at Elland Road from Wolves so it was great to see the 25-year-old finally putting together a string of good performances.
However Costa, unfortunately, looked as though he went backwards with his poor display at Fulham.
According to stats by WhoScored, the Portuguese winger failed to complete a single dribble or key pass at Craven Cottage – something he hadn’t done since the 2-0 win against QPR nine games ago.
He also made just 10 passes before he was substituted off at half time to be replaced by Eddie Nketiah.
It could be that Costa struggled this weekend due to Pablo Hernandez being taken off early in the first half with an injury.
Leeds struggle without Hernandez in the side and it seems as though the Spaniard links up quite well with his fellow Iberian.
If Hernandez is set for a lengthy spell out, is Costa going to continue struggling in the same way he did at Fulham?
Or was his form in recent weeks just a purple patch for what has been a player who has not yet really lived up to expectations at Elland Road?
