MOT View: Journo comments on potential Bielsa signing could leave Leeds fans salivating

Many Leeds United fans have been debating their dream signings should the Whites finally earn promotion back to the Premier League this season.

Phil Hay has waded in on the conversation, responding to a fan that suggested that Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic should well be the club’s main summer target.

The Athletic journalist claimed that Marcelo Bielsa would transform the goal-hungry forward, making him leaner before transforming him to improve (if that’s possible).

Writing in an Athletic Q&A on Friday, Hay claimed that a move for the Serbian international would be tailor-made at Elland Road.

“He’d fit it perfectly and given that he’s only 25, he’s got so much scope to improve,” he said.

“You know what Bielsa would do with him. He’d make him shed weight, get leaner and he’d try and raise Mitrovic’s mobility to a different level too. That’s a signing I wouldn’t say no to. Almost tailor-made.”

It’s a scary thought to imagine Mitrovic becoming even better, with the 25-year-old having already found the back of the net 23 times this season for the Cottagers.

Bielsa does just that to every player he works with though. The Argentine is capable of transforming any member of his squad, and that could unleash a totally different animal in Mitrovic.

The Serbian is known for his no-nonsense approach in the final third, and that leads to his deadly finishing at Craven Cottage.

Looking at his stats via WhoScored, Mitrovic has 3.9 attempts on goal per game and also delivers 1.1 key passes for his teammates – numbers that are seriously impressive but could get higher in this Leeds system.

Bielsa relies on a lone-target man, and if he was to get his hands on Mitrovic, you can only imagine the damage he could do for the Whites. These comments are certainly enough to get any Leeds fan salivating over the potential.
