Patrick Bamford has been in excellent goalscoring form for Leeds United this season, surpassing what many may have expected of him.
The former Chelsea forward has struck 13 times in the Premier League this season so far, registering six assists along the way for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
However the Whites can’t rely solely on his goalscoring prowess, which has seen the Leeds hierarchy explore the transfer window for potential summer recruits.
According to TeamTalk, Leeds have already made contact with Brentford to sound out a potential deal with prolific striker Ivan Toney, and he could represent the perfect competition for Bamford next season.
The 24-year old has been in red hot goalscoring form for the Bees this season, having scored 25 and assisted nine goals in 33 Championship appearances, and he’ll be itching to have a crack at the Premier League if Brentford don’t go up.
Toney’s cuts a more physical presence than Bamford, and he backs that up through better physical play. According to stats by WyScout, Toney has managed more duels per 90 minutes [25.45] than Bamford [16.19] this season, as well as more aerial duels in league competition [7.13] when compared to Leeds’ top goalscorer [3.37].
Toney has also put his physicality to good use in an offensive sense, averaging 8.35 offensive duels per 90 compared to Bamford’s 5.52. Bamford marginally wins out in shots per 90 minutes [2.95 v 2.39], however Toney’s goals per 90 [0.72 v0. 49] are more impressive.
Of course, it would be easy to dismiss Toney’s figures as less impressive due to the level of opposition he faces on a weekly basis, having played in a lower division than Bamford.
However his form has been relative to the Championship, and the fact remains that he has been posting impressive numbers all season long.
Brentford are said to be asking for £30million for Toney this summer [TeamTalk], which could price Leeds out of a move if they wish to prioritise improving their squad in other areas.
However, if Bielsa is keen on bringing a new forward to Elland Road, Toney could well be the man that Leeds need.
