Tyler Roberts has not had much joy at Leeds United this season with the Wales international suffering from various different injury problems.

The 21-year-old has managed just 12 Championship appearances since the summer, with only four of them being starts.

He has played in just three of Leeds’ last 15 matches and there is a chance he could miss out once again this weekend when the Whites play against Bristol City at Elland Road.

Roberts was not in the squad that drew 1-1 with Brentford on Tuesday due to a knock he picked up last week so unless he has recovered from that, do not expect him to feature versus the Robins.

However Marcelo Bielsa suggested on Thursday that he could view Roberts as his third-choice striker between now and the end of the season – as long as he remains fit.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of the clash with Bristol City, Bielsa was asked by Ian Poveda was not involved against Brentford on Tuesday.

Bielsa explained how he likes to organise his bench, saying that he likes to have two strikers.

It suggests that behind Patrick Bamford and Jean-Kevin Augustin, Roberts is next up on the list of strikers at Elland Road.

“I always organised the substitutes with two defenders, two midfielders and two strikers,” he said on Thursday, as quoted by The Athletic journalist Phil Hay via his personal Twitter account.

Hay then added that he also assumes Roberts is the third-choice striker in Bielsa’s eyes after what he said ahead of the clash with the Robins.

Roberts has been deployed mainly as an attacking midfielder during his time at Elland Road but the 21-year-old did rise through the ranks at West Brom by playing mainly as a striker.

In his loan spell at Walsall in the 2017/18 season – before Leeds signed him permanently from the Baggies in January 2018 – Roberts scored five goals in 17 League One appearances as a striker.

He has also appeared as a winger on both the left and right flanks but this season has seen most of his limited game-time come as an attacking midfielder in the centre of the park.

Roberts has had a frustrating time this term and if he is viewed as a third-choice striker then it could get even more frustrating if he stays fit.

Bamford and Augustin are always going to be ahead of him in Bielsa’s pecking order so unless he’s used in the midfield, the Welsh ace could find himself resigned to spending a lot of the time on the bench.

In other Leeds United news, Bielsa has offered an update on Adam Forshaw’s recovery process.
