MOT View: Bamford set for pelters as football website makes shocking claim about Leeds striker
Patrick Bamford has had a love/hate relationship with the Leeds United fans this season.
The majority of the supporters appreciate what he does on the pitch, know that Leeds are a better side with him in, but hate the fact that he’s so wasteful in front of goal.
He’s scored 13 goals this season in a free-flowing, attacking side (and cupped his ears towards the Leeds fans after one which, predictably, didn’t go down too well).
Aleksandar Mitrovic (Fulham) and Ollie Watkins (Brentford) have both scored over 20.
However, Bamford blanked again on Sunday in the 2-0 loss to Cardiff and stopped what looked like a certain goal on the line from Jack Harrison.
That led to the Twitter abuse starting up again and we think he’s in for yet more pelters after a shocking claim posted by footy website Footy Accumulators.
They pointed out the number of big chances Bamford has missed this season, which isn’t that far off double the number of Lewis Grabban in second.
They claim Bamford has missed 27 big chances this season, 10 more than Grabban for Nottingham Forest.
Leeds fans know that Bamford has been wasteful this season, but this puts it into very sharp focus.
If he had missed as many big chances as the player in second on the list, Bamford would have 10 more goals and would be tieing Mitrovic on 23 goals at the top of the scoring charts.
That’s where you expect to see the main striker from the team who’s dominated most sides in the Championship this season.
If Bamford had scored 23 goals then Leeds would probably be promoted already.
There’s even more pressure on Bamford’s shoulders now, with back-up striker Jean-Kevin Augustin unlikely to play again this season.
That leaves Tyler Roberts, who scored twice against Hull before lockdown, but hasn’t been a prolific player for Leeds yet.
We just have to hope that Bamford finds his shooting boots in the next few days – the game against Fulham on Saturday doesn’t really get any bigger.
