Manchester United could push Leeds to promotion with January transfer
Leeds United could earn an unexpected helping hand from Manchester United in returning to the Premier League should Illan Meslier move to Old Trafford.
Meslier was guilty of further crucial errors for the Whites in the 3-3 draw at Hull City on Saturday (4 January), continuing his shaky form into 2025 as he handed a late equaliser to drop two key points in the Championship.
Manchester United have been linked recently with a January move for the Frenchman [Alan Nixon, 22 December], who would be considered a deputy to Andre Onana.
Leeds have the experienced Karl Darlow waiting in the wings surely of the view Meslier has made one costly mistake too many for Daniel Farke’s patience, and young Australian stopper Robbie Cook is also signing at Elland Road too [Alan Nixon, 30 December].
Illan Meslier exit sealed at Leeds United
Without ignoring the immense potential Meslier had during his early days at Leeds United, it could now be at the point where it is better for all parties to move.
The 24-year-old performed excellently in large spells in the Premier League, with many expecting him to progress to becoming the long-term France number one.
However, his performances this season have been nerve-wracking, error-strewn and if Leeds do not earn promotion for a second year running, they can lay plenty of blame at the points Meslier has cost them in ruthlessly vital moments.

Manchester United would be receiving a ‘keeper who would lose the pressure off his shoulders of being a number one at a massive club, and who could work towards pushing Onana in a protected environment.
Meslier is under contract until 2026 and the more transfer windows go by with Leeds mulling over their long-term goalkeeping plans, the more millions are slashed off the fee the Whites would receive for a ‘keeper with a tremendous age profile and relative level of experience.
In other Leeds news, the club are considering a highly-rated Championship midfielder.
