Marcelo Bielsa saw his Leeds United team lose 1-0 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday and while it wasn’t a classic, Match of the Day’s reaction to the match was absolutely woeful.
Anwar El-Ghazi’s first-half goal was enough to secure the win for Villa but according to stats by WhoScored, the two teams still shared 22 shots between them and Leeds generated an xG of 0.98 so they could have walked away with a point.
But if you listened to Match of the Day’s post-match analysis on Saturday night, you would be forgiven for thinking that Leeds did absolutely nothing.
Now, we do like hearing Bielsa and his players get praised by pundits but the same, run-of-the-mill quotes about Leeds are getting tiresome now.
And that is exactly what we got from Gary Lineker and Jermaine Jenas on Saturday night as the pair completely ducked away from saying anything about Leeds’ actual performance versus Villa.
“Leeds, you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get but you do tend to – perhaps not this one – get a lot of entertaining games,” said Lineker on BBC’s Match of the Day on Saturday night.
“They’re mid-table and [it’s been] a great first season.”
Jenas replied by saying: “Great first season, loads to build on and a lot to get excited about at the football club. Some ups and downs but great to watch.”
We’ve heard it all before and it’s getting boring now.
If we don’t play well, say something negative about us. We should not have lost that game really when you look at the stats.
It’s boring to hear that we’re ‘doing well for a promotion team’ or are ‘involved in a lot of games so we’re entertaining.
At least we’re more entertaining than the punditry.
Why not do some actual analysis on the match rather than just looking at the Premier League table?
Match of the Day was an hour long on Saturday night and had just four league matches to cover so it’s odd that there wasn’t any kind of proper reaction to that performance.
In other Leeds United news, Bielsa must unleash this young sensation before the season ends.
