Liam Cooper should be undroppable for Leeds United with unrivalled leadership

There were plenty of positives to take from Sunday (16 October) as Leeds United were beaten 1-0 by Premier League leaders Arsenal.

The Whites did create plenty of chances and an in-form Patrick Bamford would have put most of them away but he had a very bad off day to deny them a point and there was almost unlimited running from the entire team throughout the game.

But perhaps the biggest plus point of the day was club captain Liam Copper playing his 250th game for the football club and looking solid at the back once more.

“Tough one to take yesterday. Quick turnaround and looking for 3 points midweek,” Cooper said via his personal Twitter account. “On a personal note, delighted to have made my 250th appearance. Thanks for the continued support. MOT.”

The 31-year-old might not be the most fashionable defender in the modern game as playing out of the back is not exactly his forte but what he lacks in that department, he makes up for with 100 per cent commitment to defending.

There are not enough central defenders like him in the Premier League at the moment who are just focused on defending their own goal and not worried about starting attacks too often.

With Robin Koch alongside him, Cooper doesn’t need to be the player who plays the killer ball from defence into midfield as the German takes on that role along with full-backs Rasmus Kristensen and Pascal Struijk.

Taking Cooper out of the defence would throw everything out of shape to a near-disastrous angle and Jesse Marsch would not be able to wrestle it back without another similar player to replace him.

Right now, Leeds United do not have that to boot so unless he gets suspended or injure, Cooper should be one of the first names on the teamsheet for every game to be the leader the whole squad needs.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites could make a big move in January as one of their summer targets was completely axed from the most recent matchday squad.
