Leeds United ‘to regret Mateo Joseph exit decision’ after last-gasp £8m+ update
Daniel Farke saw zero new additions made to the Leeds United squad during the winter transfer window.
With the Whites pushing to win promotion back to the Premier League, sitting top of the Championship table, many supporters have condemned the lack of activity in the transfer market.
Adding new players to the squad is very risky business halfway through the campaign, especially when leading the likes of Sheffield United and Burnley by two and five points, respectively.
In addition to this, a number of the first-team players were linked with moves away, and rather unexpectedly, Mateo Joseph was the subject of a late bid just hours before the 11pm deadline.
According to El Desmarque [3 February], Real Betis were working hard to sign the 21-year-old Spaniard, submitting an £8.2million bid to secure his signature before the transfer window slammed shut.
With Joseph still at Elland Road on Tuesday 4 February, Leeds clearly turned down any approaches for the youngster, but could they end up regretting that decision?
Leeds United to regret Mateo Joseph exit decision?
The Spain Under-21s international was given an incredible opportunity by Farke at the start of the campaign to prove himself in the starting XI but Joel Piroe has since taken over.
He has just three goals and three assists to his name, and compared to the free-flowing attackers around him, many supporters have been disappointed after finally being given a shot in the team.
With Leeds looking more and more likely to be winning promotion to the Premier League this season, Joseph’s struggles in front of goal could only increase at a much higher level.
It seems harsh to say but if the Whites are to jump up a division ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, the hierarchy might end up regretting their decision not to strike when the iron is hot and cash in.

£8million is a lot of money for a Championship club, and while there will be a lot of prize money for winning promotion at the end of this season, clubs are always looking to make more profit.
Most supporters would have been relieved to see no further updates on the forward’s future at Elland Road, but given the hefty price tag reportedly being offered, the decision might come back to haunt later down the line.
