Leeds United to be furious with Leicester City development as fresh EFL unrest emerges

Leeds United have every right to be angry with Leicester City as the Foxes look to do whatever they can to avoid a six-point deduction this season.

It was announced on Thursday (via BBC Sport, 21 March) that Leicester City had been charged by the Premier League for breaching profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

They posted a response on Friday via their official website (22 March), revealing that they would be issuing “urgent legal proceedings” against the Premier League and EFL.

One part of the statement read, “The Club is committed to ensure that any charges against it are properly and proportionately determined, in accordance with the applicable rules, by the right bodies, and at the right time.”

That final message, “at the right time” will leave their Championship rivals, including the Whites, particularly frustrated.

As per the Daily Mail (23 March), the Premier League were keen to pursue an expedited hearing to ensure that Leicester’s case was heard this season, but the Foxes’ legal challenge stops this possibility.

The Premier League can push for fast-track processes when they feel necessary, and in this case, they were keen to do so to ensure the integrity of the promotion race in the Championship was maintained.

However, Leicester seemingly have different ideas.

Sources revealed to the Daily Mail that Leicester’s breach is a “significant” one which will trigger a six-point deduction, and on that basis, it looks as if the club have very little hope of a successful appeal.

As a result, it is hard to argue with Leeds’ claims that this is simply a stalling tactic to ensure that they win automatic promotion back to England’s top flight.

Leicester are currently second in the Championship, level on points with Leeds having played a game less, and one point ahead of third-placed Ipswich Town.

What looked to be a runaway Championship-title-winning campaign for Enzo Maresca’s side is suddenly very tight after their poor run of form which has seen them win just one in five.

Meanwhile, Daniel Farke’s side are flying high, on an impressive run of form which sees them unbeaten in league competition since a 1-0 defeat to West Brom at The Hawthorns at the end of 2023 (29 December).

It looks set to be one of the most exciting Championship finishes in years, and the Whites will feel incredibly aggrieved that all of their hard work could be undone by financial breaches out of their control.

Should the Foxes go up at the expense of Leeds, and be hit with a six-point deduction in the Premier League next season, the next time the two sides meet it could prove to be a fiery encounter.
