Leeds United signing Chris Richards must be a start of overhauling defence

Leeds United are interested in signing Bayern Munich young defender Chris Richards this summer, according to 90min.

The Whites may be in the market to sign players to strengthen the backline after a horrendous campaign where they narrowly managed to escape relegation.

The report states that Bayern might be open to letting the 22-year-old leave if a decent offer arrives from any interested party.

The German club signed the USMNT international after a successful trial in 2018. Since then, Richards has only represented the club’s senior team in 10 matches across all competitions [Transfermarkt].

There is no doubt that defence was the biggest issue for Leeds in the recently concluded season.

Even though the defence was never their stronghold, the way it was exploited in the previous campaign surely rang alarm bells at the headquarters of the club.

The Whites conceded 79 goals in the 2021-22 Premier League season, the second-highest tally behind relegated Norwich City [Premier League].

Those numbers are not good enough for any club to maintain their status in top-flight football and even though Leeds did manage to keep their place, manager Jesse Marsch would be rightly eager to bolster the defensive side of things.

Signing someone like Richards might prove to be a step in that direction as he is young, he will come from a big club in Bayern and is a USMNT international which will make it easy to work with the Leeds manager who is also from the same country.

However, that should just be the start of addressing the bigger problems at the back as Leeds clearly need more players to ensure that they stop conceding too many goals.
