Leeds United rub salt in Millwall wounds with brutal social media post

Leeds United took delight in beating Millwall at Elland Road on Wednesday as they returned to the top of the Championship table.

Daniel Farke’s side were gifted the lead inside three minutes after Millwall skipper Jake Cooper steered a Manor Solomon cross into his own net, and 82 one-sided minutes later, Ao Tanaka made it two for Leeds.

Leeds’ erratic execution in the final third saw them muster just two shots on target from 18 attempts – not including Cooper’s own goal – with Tanaka’s first-time strike finally seeing them finish Millwall off.

Therefore, United have beaten Millwall at the third attempt this season after 1-0 and 2-0 losses in the Championship and FA Cup respectively – something which Leeds couldn’t resist mentioning at full-time.

Leeds launch fresh Millwall dig after Elland Road revenge

Leeds’ near-impregnable home form in the league this term has seen them drop points on a mere four occasions and lose just once, but it’s been a different story in both this season’s EFL and FA Cup.

Leeds were completely on top in their 2-0 win over Millwall

After Middlesbrough won 3-0 in the EFL Cup first round back in August, Millwall pitched up at Elland Road in last month’s FA Cup tie and claimed a scalp with a 2-0 victory to reach the fifth round.

However, after Wednesday’s dominant victory to claim three Championship points, Leeds mocked Millwall’s subsequent FA Cup exit to Crystal Palace last weekend, labelling them “Fifth Round finalists”.

Leeds send subtle parting gift to Millwall

If Farke’s side use Wednesday’s result to kick on and secure their place in the Championship’s top two in the final nine games of the regular season, it remains to be seen if and when they’ll face Millwall again.

While the Lions are still mathematically in the vying to claim a play-off place at season’s end, their seven-team and eight-point gap to Coventry City in sixth suggests that qualifying would be a long shot.

With a four-point gap to third-placed Burnley heading into Saturday’s early kick-off against QPR, Leeds have a chance to put the play-off places at arm’s length and consolidate their place in the top two.

The home straight – and the Premier League – is now firmly in Leeds’ sights, and if United can get over the line and leave Millwall in the Championship once again, Wednesday’s display was a clear statement.
