Leeds United can sign off on Illan Meslier exit amid transfer update abroad

Illan Meslier has been linked with a switch to Stade Rennais and Leeds United must jump at the opportunity to offload him.

The French goalkeeper, 24, has failed to impress throughout his time at Elland Road and a report from Jeunes Footeux (8 December) states that Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais want to sign Meslier in January.

A howler against Sunderland in October is just one of several issues the goalkeeper has made during his time at the club and Leeds must jump at the opportunity to get rid of the Frenchman.

Leeds United should sell Illan Meslier in January

As a whole, the Whites have a remarkable Championship squad and aside from a troubled position in the striker department, there aren’t many deficiencies.

However, goalkeeping is certainly one of them and Meslier has been at fault for several goals conceded this season, while demonstrating poor ability for many others.

In fact, according to FotMob, Meslier is actually one of the worst-performing goalkeepers in the division.

The Frenchman has prevented -0.3 goals which, put into simple terms, shows he isn’t actually doing his job that well.

Only a handful of keepers have a worse record in that regard and it comes as no surprise to see those playing for teams at the bottom of the Championship. His outfield teammates are having to work twice as hard to win games.

Added to that, his save percentage at just 67.5 per cent is bettered by 12 other keepers in the league, despite the Whites being expected to chase promotion.

The fact he has the joint-most clean sheets in the league is a huge testament to those in front of him and if Leeds can sell him in January, they must take that opportunity.

In other Leeds United news, Chris Wilder has namedropped the Whites in a new promotion admission.
